But what if progress
were measured differently?

Humanity has spent millennia measuring progress through competition—who has more, who moves faster, who holds greater power, and who stands above whom.

What if the greatest achievement were not to surpass another human being, but to surpass ourselves?

This idea is inspired by a recurring ethic associated with Ernest Hemingway: a conception of nobility rooted not in superiority over others, but in the courage, dignity, discipline, and grace with which we face ourselves and the world.

Nobility is not aristocracy. It is not social rank, privilege, wealth, or inherited status. It is a standard of conduct. It is available to anyone.

A person becomes noble not because of where they were born, what they possess, or where they stand in society, but through how they choose to use what they have been given. It is the courage to become wiser, more capable, more compassionate, and more responsible than we were before.

“When humans acquire knowledge, wealth, power, technology, and freedom, what kind of people should they choose to become?”
The governing question of civilisation
03

The Five Dimensions of Civilisation

Greater capability does not automatically produce greater wisdom. The more powerful humanity becomes, the more important the question of character becomes.

Education

How do we become wiser than our former selves?

Economy

How do we create greater value without requiring another person to lose dignity?

Environment

How do we leave the world better than we inherited it?

Establishment

How do we build institutions better than those that preceded them?

Humanity

How do we become more courageous, compassionate, disciplined, and capable?

04

Not winning over others.
But becoming better than ourselves.

Not power for its own sake.
But power governed by character.

Not progress at any cost.
But progress with nobility.

The Nobility Manifesto is the philosophy. The 25 Movements is the framework for putting that philosophy into practice.
